Body Of Minnetonka Man Washes Up Near Split Rock Lighthouse

The body was found on a Lake Superior beach Saturday.

A body that was found near Split Rock Lighthouse in Silver Bay has been identified as a 45-year-old man from Minnetonka. On Saturday, Nov. 25 just after 7 a.m., the Lake County Sheriff's Office received a call about a body that had washed up on a Lake Superior beach near the lighthouse.

The body was later identified as Derek Sigurd Hansen. Authorities believe Hansen drowned, but what lead up to his death is still under investigation. An autopsy will be conducted.

Two people died near the lighthouse in September. On Sept. 10, a 14-year-old girl died after falling off a cliff. On Sept. 25, a 42-year-old man died after diving near the Madeira Shipwreck, authorities reported.
