Minnetonka Rotary Scholarships 2018

The high school awards ceremonies were held in May. The Minnetonka Awards Ceremony was held on May 16th in the Minnetonka High School Auditorium. And the Hopkins Awards Ceremony was held on May 30thin the Hopkins High School Auditorium. At the Minnetonka Awards Ceremony there were over 70 presentations, and at Hopkins there were 33 such presentations. Both of the presentations had proud parents and friends clapping and cheering as each award recipient was announced.

At the Minnetonka Ceremony, Karen Hoppe, of the Minnetonka Rotary awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Soraya Weise of Minnetonka. Soraya was excited about her presentation and plans to attend Cedarville University in Ohio to study Music Education. Soraya has been involved in Building Responsible Youth by helping to guide younger students at school and as a counselor at a summer camp. She has also been involved with her church and being of service during mission trips to help those less fortunate.

The Hopkins Scholarship Awards Program was held on May 30th with Karen Hoppe, of the Minnetonka Rotary Foundation, there to present the $1,000 scholarship to Emma Carlson of Hopkins. Emma has chosen to go to Bethel University to study elementary education.

Karen Hoppe, a member of the Minnetonka Rotary Foundation said, “It was wonderful to watch our graduates at both awards ceremonies and seeing what they are giving back to our communities, now and in the future. Both of the awards ceremonies had an atmosphere of excitement with cheering and clapping as each award took place. The Minnetonka Rotary believes in ‘Building Responsible Youth’, and both of these high school students were excellent choices for us to invest in for the future. Both of the award ceremonies were well organized and the enthusiasm was visible as the audience reacted to each award.”

Additionally, The Minnetonka Rotary Foundation on Monday, June 4, 2018 sponsored the graduation ceremony of GED ( General Educational Development ) Graduating class of Hopkins High School. This program supports the communities of Hopkins, Minnetonka, and St Louis Park for young people who did not graduate in a traditional high school setting and returned to get an equivalency high school diploma. This years graduating class of 35 students were expectant and excited to receive their diplomas.

The Minnetonka Rotary Foundation awarded a $1000 scholarship to Omuar Buyoya who was excited to receive this scholarship. Omar is planning to attend North Hennepin Community College and pursuing Nursing to work in the Healthcare industry.

At the ceremony, Keynote Speaker, St Louis Park Superintendent Astein Osei spoke about his own childhood and some advice from his Grandmother…. “None of us make it on our own without the support of family and friends.” … and went on to add … “Many of people who in life fail don’t realize just how close they were to success before they gave up, and you graduates have shown the courage to complete this course work and over come being a high school drop out…. and you should be proud of that fact.”
