Minnetonka To Vote On Ranked Choice Voting

Minnetonka continuing to use the current election system, which asks voters to vote for one candidate per office.

During the 2020 general election, Minnetonka will vote on the use of ranked choice voting for future city elections.

If you vote yes, you’re in favor of:

  • Using ranked choice voting to elect the mayor and council members, beginning in November 2021.
  • The elimination of primary elections for mayor and city council elections.

If you vote no, you’re in favor of:

  • Minnetonka continuing to use the current election system, which asks voters to vote for one candidate per office.
  • The continuing use of primary elections whenever more than two candidates run for mayor or a particular city council seat.

Please remember

  • If Minnetonka voters adopt ranked choice voting, it will only impact mayor and city council elections. It will not change the way you vote for school board, county, state or federal offices.
  • In accordance with state law, the city does not endorse either a “yes” or “no” vote on this issue. Voters are encouraged to educate themselves on ranked choice voting and make their own decision.
  • Any mailings, signs or other communications that advocate a “yes” or “no” vote have not been sent or posted by the city. The city’s official logo is on all city communications.
  • Opinions expressed by members of the city council are their own and do not represent the city’s official position.
