Obituary: Theresa Ackerman Berman

The funeral service is 11 a.m. on Sunday at Adath Jeshurun Congregation in Minnetonka.

Dear National Council of Jewish Women Members and Friends,

We are saddened to announce that Theresa Ackerman Berman passed away Thursday, just one month after her 100th birthday. We lost an NCJW pioneer.

A woman ahead of her time, Theresa was a leader, an artist, a philanthropist and a cherished matriarch. She will be remembered for her devotion to social justice, her elegance, graciousness and relentless energy for leading a full and meaningful life.

Theresa served as the President of the NCJW Minneapolis Board from 1950-1954, and on the National Board from 1957-1963. Under her leadership NCJW started Council House, a center for older adults that sparked the Senior Center movement that has survived and thrived across the country.

Theresa is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Sharon & Phil Snyder and Lillian Berman Goldfarb; son, Lyle Berman, daughters-in-law, Connie Berman and Jan Berman; grandchildren, Jaye Snyder (Kenneth Brimmer), Julie Berman (Hal Kaufman), Laura Snyder Klapper (Marty), Bradley Berman (Erica), Amy Berman and Jessie Berman and 14 great-grandchildren. Also survived by her six nieces and trusted friend and caregiver extraordinaire, Larry Michno. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Nathan; her sisters, Ruth Davis, Florence Etkin and June Greene and her parents, Lillian and M.L. Ackerman and her son-in-law, Gerald Goldfarb.

The funeral service will be held on SUNDAY 11 a.m. at ADATH JESHURUN CONGREGATION, 10500 Hillside Lane West. Minnetonka. SHIVA Sunday 6:30 p.m. at Adath Jeshurun Congregation and Monday 7 p.m. at 12700 Sherwood Place (community room) in Minnetonka.
