83-Year-Old Pedestrian Dies In Faribault Crash

An initial investigation revealed a car was backing out of a parking stall when it struck a woman, police said.

FARIBAULT, MN — A crash in Faribault Monday afternoon left one woman dead. On Dec. 10 just before 1:30 p.m., Faribault officers were dispatched to an injured pedestrian in the parking lot at 100 State Avenue.

The caller reported a woman was on the ground and bleeding from her head and face.

Officers found an 83-year-old woman, later identified as Darlene Ulrich, being attended to by medical staff. She was hospitalized but later died from her injuries.

Police say an initial investigation revealed a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser had been backing out of a parking stall when it struck Ulrich and continued backing until striking another vehicle.

Several witnesses to the crash described the PT Cruiser as backing at a high rate of speed, according to authorities.

Authorities are investigating the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor at this time, police said.

When the investigation is concluded, all reports will be forwarded to the Rice County Attorney to review and consider criminal charges, according to a news release.

“In a time of year that is supposed to be so festive, our collective hearts go out to both families involved in this terrible incident," Faribault Police Chief Bohlen said in a statement.

"The department will work diligently to determine all the factors that contributed to her death."
