Amish Boy, 12, Dies In Buggy-Car Crash In Minnesota

FILLMORE COUNTY, MN — A 12-year-old Amish boy has died after a crash involving the horse-drawn buggy he was riding in and a car in southern Minnesota. The fatal collision occurred in Newburg Township on Friday evening.

Just after 7 p.m., an Oldsmobile Alero and a buggy were both eastbound on Highway 44. The buggy was making a left turn when it collided with the Oldsmobile, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Neither the passenger nor the driver in the Oldsmobile were injured.

Six people were riding in the buggy. Joe Mast was hospitalized but later died. Three passengers of the buggy were uninjured, and two others suffered non-life threatening injuries.

"During a time when we all hold our families close, a neighbor and good friends of ours were involved in a tragic accident Dec. 20th," a GoFundMe page established for the Mast family reads.

"Instead of preparing for Christmas celebration, they are planning a funeral for their 12 year old son. The Mast family was on their way to a children’s Christmas program when their buggy carrying 6 family members was accidentally struck by a vehicle."
