Blowing Snow Will Make Travel Difficult In Southern Minnesota

NORTHFIELD, MN — Heavy snowfall, strong winds and blowing snow are forecast for south central and southwest Minnesota Wednesday evening through Thursday, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation wants motorists to prepare for changing weather conditions that could make travel hazardous.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for portions of southwest and south-central Minnesota. A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the remainder of south-central Minnesota.

Snowfall accumulations of 4-6 inches are possible throughout the area, with strong winds developing on Thursday.

Motorists can expect slippery roads and significantly reduced visibilities with blowing and drifting snow. Temperatures well below the freezing mark by Friday morning could worsen road conditions.

MnDOT snowplow operators will do their part to make highways safe and motorists should remember to:

• Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They also may travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
• Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.
• Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.
• Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.
• Turn off the cruise control.
• Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
• Don’t drive distracted.
