Fireworks In Minnesota: What’s Legal And Not Legal
A number of fireworks are considered illegal in Minnesota and come with hefty fines. Know which fireworks your family can enjoy this July 4.

While you may think it’s a good idea to skip the city-hosted fireworks shows to stay at home, avoid the crowds and put on your own patriotic display; however, Minnesota residents should think twice before lighting those fireworks in their neighborhood.
Most consumer fireworks are illegal in the state of Minnesota — in fact, anything that flies or explodes could get you into trouble with local law enforcement. Those caught with illegal fireworks could have to pay a fine of $700 to $3,000, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
So which fireworks can you enjoy this Fourth of July? Here’s a sampling:

- Sparklers
- Cones and tubes that emit sparks
- Novelty items like snakes and party poppers

In 2018, there were 64 fireworks-related injuries in the state of Minnesota, in addition to an estimated $262,000 in reported property damage, according to the Department of Public Safety.
