Northfield Administrator Martig Statement On Verdict

As we all know, the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin is conviction of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. First, and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with George Floyd’s family and friends.

This is a very difficult time and one of strong emotions for us all. Unfortunately, often our greatest growth comes out of great suffering.

Today, the jury rendered accountability to Mr. Chauvin for his actions. Tonight, we take pause to again grieve for George Floyd and the ongoing racial inequities and injustices that are still all too real and prevalent in our society. Tomorrow, is a new day and brings new opportunities for change.

The City Council is re-committing to our community efforts around racial equity initiatives in our community as evidenced by the new strategic plan in development. I would like to call out at this time my profound appreciation of the complexity and challenges facing our peace officers. I am proud of our Northfield police officers and their commitment to caring public safety services to all in our community delivered in an equitable and compassionate manner.

But, we can and must, all do better. I am committed to continue to identify how we may eliminate racism, racial bias and racial inequities in our operations and in our community.
