Northfield Public Library Hosts Inaugural Pride In The Park

Northfield Public Library invites all to celebrate and show support of the LBGTQ+ community with the city’s first Pride in the Park celebration on Saturday, June 5 from noon to 3 p.m. at Central Park, 421 Fourth Street East. Organizations, churches, and businesses around the area are joining together to take part in this special event.

June is nationally recognized as LBGTQ+ Pride month.

“The Library is thrilled to be hosting Northfield’s first Pride celebration,” says Library Director Natalie Draper. “Public celebrations of the traditions, cultures, history, and diversity of all in our community can go a long way toward making people feel seen, included, and truly welcome in Northfield.”

The library will hold a Pride storytime at 12:30 p.m. and the Northfield YMCA will get hearts pumping with a free cardio class at 1 p.m. Northfield Dance Academy students will perform at 2 p.m., and there will be a youth panel at 2:30 p.m.

Attendees can make pronoun buttons with the Northfield Union of Youth, make Pride pom-poms with the Northfield Arts Guild, meet Minnesota LGBTQ young adult author Rachel Gold, bring their dogs for a Pride airbrush or pooch pedicure with Plush Pups, and more.

Exhibitors include the Minnesota Transgender Alliance, OutFront Minnesota, FiftyNorth, trans-owned candle company Homebody MN, several Northfield churches, and many more. The Library BookBike will be stocked with LGBTQ+ books for checkout and Northfield residents can get library cards onsite. Age-Friendly Northfield will bring 52 red chairs from The Red Chair Project as priority seating for older individuals and people with disabilities.

The goal of Pride in the Park is to support and celebrate the diverse LGBTQ+ community in Northfield and surrounding communities. Everyone is welcome to bring a picnic, visit with exhibitors and guests, and enjoy an afternoon in the park.

Tanzenwald Brewery plans to host a socially-distanced patio party after the celebration to show support of the community.
