April Is Fair Housing Month In Oakdale

Today kicks off national Fair Housing Month, which is recognized through the month of April.

Fair Housing month celebrates the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act in April 1968. The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to consider certain personal characteristics including race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or family status in most kinds of housing transactions. In Minnesota, the Minnesota Human Rights Act also makes it illegal to consider sexual orientation, marital status, creed, or public assistance status.

Despite more than 50 years of fair housing law, discrimination and unfair treatment still occur in some housing transactions. Housing discrimination can take many forms and isn’t always obvious. Read examples of housing discrimination and learn more about Fair Housing rights and obligations.
