Hundreds of Parents Set to Gather for Upcoming Parenting Forum

For the 17th year in a row, Wayzata Public Schools parents will gather for a half-day event at Wayzata Central Middle School where they’ll learn about future plans for the district.

The event is put on by the PTA and PTO liaison committee, Wayzata Public Schools, Communities in Collaboration Council and the Wayzata Family Learning Center. 

Parenting District Liaison Committee president Karen Arkesteyn said that unlike past events, this year, the parenting forum will feature a group of district officials who will review what’s happening in Wayzata schools, and how growth may impact the district in the future.

A panel of five people--including Superintendent Chace Anderson, Director of Technology Wade Phillips and Executive Director of Business and Finance Jim Westrum--will give a “state of the district” address with time for a question and answer session.

“I know there will be discussions about the growth of the district and how technology plays a role,” Arkesteyn, who has three children in the district, said. “We expect about 400 parents to attend.”

Wayzata’s MyWay initiative encourages the use of technology, especially iPads. In a vision presentation given last August, Wayzata Schools said that iPads help to provide a more personalized learning environment. Phillips will address the use of iPads through the district, and explain the future plans for implementation of technology.

After the panel discussion, which is scheduled to last about an hour, parents can attend mini sessions on a wide variety of topics, including teen sexuality, time management for kids, tips for new moms and even CPR training.
