Plymouth Man Hospitalized After Climbing Utility Pole in Dinkytown

An eyewitness told the Star Tribune she saw him aflame and with blood coming out of his mouth.

Steven C. McKinney, 24, of Plymouth has been hospitalized after scaling an electric utility pole in Minneapolis around 1:30 in the morning Wednesday, Oct. 9, according to media reports.

A spokesperson with the Minneapolis Police Department told the Star Tribune that McKinney was reportedly an "experienced climber." Reportedly, McKinney was shocked while climbing the pole near the University of Minnesota in Dinkytown.

The Star Tribune talked to a witness who said the man fell to the ground, was in flames and had blood coming from his mouth.

According to Xcel Energy, there was "public contact with a pole" near the corner of 14th Avenue and 7th Street Southeast in a residential area.

McKinney came in "contact with live wires" and accidentally got electrocuted and caused the transmitter to blow up and knock out power to the area. He was brought by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center, reports the Star Tribune.
