Crashes Mount as Heavy Snow Hits Minnesota

Friday's winter weather is causing havoc on Minnesota highways.

The weekend's snowstorm is already causing havoc on Minnesota highways. Between 1 a.m. and 12 p.m. Friday, the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) has reported 362 crashes (35 injured, zero fatal or serious) and 216 vehicle off road/spin out incidents.

Of those crashes, 332 occurred in the metro area. A total of 103 off road/spin out incidents occurred in the Twin Cities during this time period.

After a relative lull Friday morning, heavy snow has begun affecting evening commutes.

Total snow accumulations of 8 to 11 inches are expected across much of the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota into central and southern Wisconsin, with amounts tapering off gradually to the north.

MSP is reminding motorists that if snow is falling, your headlights must be on while driving. It's required under Minnesota law.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect from noon Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday. A wind chill warning will then go into effect from 6 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday.
