Health Officials Warn Against Consuming Minnesota-Made Drink

The Leathered Aquavit, manufactured by the Norseman Distillery of Minneapolis, was made with tanned leather.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is advising consumers not to drink Norseman Distillery's "Leathered Aquavit" product because an unapproved ingredient was used in the making of this product. The Leathered Aquavit, manufactured by Norseman Distillery of Minneapolis, was made with non-food grade tanned leather (animal hide), which is an unapproved food ingredient, according to health officials.

Health officials say consumers who purchased the product should not drink it and should instead throw it away.

The health advisory includes all of the company’s Leathered Aquavit. Aquavit is a flavored alcohol typically made from grain or potatoes.

The Norseman product was sold in 750mL bottles and distributed to various restaurant and retail service locations, according to a news release.

The MDA became aware of the issue after receiving a complaint. State officials are not aware of any illnesses associated with the products. However, the MDA is advising the public of this concern because they say "the safety of the product cannot be assured."
