High Heat, Some Storms Possible This Weekend In Twin Cities

Heat index values in the Twin Cities area could reach 101 degrees despite thunderstorms Friday through Sunday​.

TWIN CITIES, MN — Starting Friday, the Twin Cities area will be faced with an unusually high heat index and thunderstorms starting Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday as heat index values climb to 101 degrees. During this period, residents are encouraged to avoid working outdoors or participating in other outdoor activities.

To avoid heat-related illness, residents should stay indoors, avoid the sun, hydrate regularly and wear loose-fitting clothes, the Weather Service recommends.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has also been issued for the area this weekend. Several areas in central and southern Minnesota are expected to see isolated thunderstorms starting on Friday.

The Weather Service said thunderstorms are expected to continue through Sunday. Although the main threat during this period will be heavy rain, meteorologists say severe weather is possible, especially on Saturday evening into the overnight hours.

The rain could contribute to humidity and worsen heat index values, The Weather Service reports.
