Medica Reaches 2017 Enrollment Limit in Minnesota
Minnesotans who buy health insurance on the individual market have one less health plan option to choose from.

Minnesotans who buy health insurance on the individual market have one less health plan option to choose from. On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Commerce announced that Medica, an insurance company based out of Minnetonka, has hit its enrollment cap for 2017.
Medica has reached its 2017 enrollment limit for health insurance plans in Minnesota’s individual market, according to a news release. Effective Nov. 11, individual health plans from Medica are no longer available for purchase by new customers, either on or off the MNsure exchange.
The news comes after several health plan carries, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, decided to pull out of the individual market, citing significant financial losses.

The Medica enrollment limit also does not affect anyone living in the five counties (Benton, Crow Wing, Mille Lacs, Morrison and Stearns) where the only available insurers all have enrollment limits. In an agreement with the Minnesota Commerce Department, Medica will continue to accept new customers from these five counties.
Medica has limited 2017 statewide enrollment to 50,000 in order to ensure its capacity to serve its policyholders. Blue Plus does not have an enrollment limit; however, all other insurers in Minnesota’s individual market do have limits for 2017. Medica is the first carrier to reach its limit.
