Munich-Style St. Paul Oktoberfest Celebrates 18th Annual Event At Historic Schmidt Brewery

ST PAUL — From Rice Street to Rice Park and now the Historic Schmidt Brewery, the demand for more authentic German culture in Minnesota has continued to push the Munich-style St. Paul Oktoberfest to grow even bigger.

“Unlike the host of places where you can experience an Americanized Oktoberfest, St. Paul Oktoberfest provides Minnesotans a place to truly experience German culture – and people are taking notice.” Jeana Anderson Executive Director of the Germanic American Institute (GAI) said. “Through our Munich-style celebration, we invite patrons to experience German culture not only through fun for the whole family, but also authentic history and heritage.”

What makes an Oktoberfest more authentic than others? For starters, the event opens the very same days as Munich in September. The event features a horse-drawn parade, a hammer and spigot keg tapping by public official, competitive races, a wedding ceremony, and a carnival-like atmosphere that’s fun for all ages.

“Our Oktoberfest is true to the history and heritage of Munich’s celebration, but with a St. Paul twist.” Linda DeRoode, Event Director said. “Just like Munich, we serve the host city’s local beer, Summit, we host a St. Paul couple getting married naming them king and queen, and instead of horse races, we race a St. Paul-made cast-iron bed down the street.”

The 18th Annual St. Paul Oktoberfest returns to the Historic Schmidt Brewery on Friday, September 15 from 4-10pm and Saturday, September 16 from 10am-10pm. Free to attend. To enjoy alcoholic beverages, wristbands are $5 with valid 21+ID.
