St. Paul Home Where F. Scott Fitzgerald Found His Fortune

Check out this beautiful old row house where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the book that landed him in the annals of American literary history.

SAINT PAUL, MN – The historic "F. Scott Fitzgerald House" on Summit Ave. was recently snatched up by a private party for a few hundred thousand dollars. This 1889 row house is where a broke and despondent Fitzgerald returned home to his parents, sat down in the legendary "room below the roof", and wrote This Side of Paradise. The book sold well; his literary career was finally off and running.

Summit Terrace, as the house is also known, bears a distinctive Victorian/Romanesque Revival exterior made out of stone, with a decisively Victorian interior. It has six bedrooms and two bathrooms over 3,000 square feet. Some of the rooms, such as the kitchen, have been modernized, but much of the house retains its turn-of-the-century wood elements.

The house has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972, as shown on a permanent sign in the front garden. To this day you can see Segway tours stop by in the summertime to gawk at the house and try to identify the room below the roof. The residents don't mind.
