Police Shoot, Kill Shakopee Man After Fire Alarm Call: BCA

"Fearing for his life," the officer shot the man, according to police.

SHAKOPEE, MN — Authorities are investigating after a Shakopee police officer shot and killed a 61-year-old man late Friday. Officer Thor Carlson, who was identified as the shooter by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, is currently on standard administrative leave.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man killed as James Paul Hanchett, of Shakopee. Hanchett died of multiple gunshot wounds.

According to the Shakopee Police Department, on Nov. 9 just after 11 p.m., officers from the Shakopee Police Department responded to the 800 block of Apgar Street for a fire alarm call.

Officers approached the home and were met at the front door by a man — later identified as Hanchett —holding a handgun, police said.

While standing at the front door, the man raised the handgun and pointed it an officer.

"Fearing for his life," the officer shot and hit the man, authorities said. The man was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers involved were wearing body cameras and the incident was recorded, according to a news release. Investigators recovered a handgun from the scene.

The BCA will evaluate the body camera videos and other evidence from the scene to determine the events that led up to the shooting. When the investigation is complete, the agency will turn its findings over to the Scott County Attorney’s Office for review.
