Shakopee City Council's Meeting Highlights For January 5

The Shakopee City Council met Tuesday, Jan. 5. Prior to the meeting, Council Members Matt Lehman and Jay Whiting were sworn into four-year terms through December 2024. Among the meeting highlights:

Council to move forward with refuse and recycling proposal

The City Council directed staff to move forward with issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for citywide organized refuse and recycling collection. The city’s current contract with Republic Services ends in December 2021. Staff requested feedback on the scope of the proposed RFP, as well as consideration of adopting an open system. After discussion, the council directed staff to prepare a draft proposal for approval at its Jan. 19 meeting with responses due in April. Council approves purchase of vehicles

The City Council approved the purchase of equipment, as outlined in the 2021 Capital Improvement Program. Purchases included:

  • Four marked patrol vehicles, Police Department, total purchase amount: $190,961.76
  • 2021 Ford Explorer, Administration, total purchase amount: $35,947.30
  • Water tanker truck with 2,000-gallon water tank, Public Works, total purchase amount: $189,615.00
  • Two plow trucks, Public Works, total purchase amount: $471,198.00

City accepts benches for Lions Park

The City Council graciously accepted the donation of 11 memorial benches to be placed around the Lions Park splash pad and throughout the park. The benches, which were donated as part of the Shakopee Lions Club;s splash pad project, are donated in memory of Norbert and Grace Schmitt, Hank Theis, Harold "Ed" Bigot, Lavella Hope Kyes, Suzanne O'Brien, Jennifer Eckers, Ralph and Dolores Menden, Patricia and Richard Erickson and Family, Myron Gruetzmacher and the Shakopee Valley Lions. The total value of the donation is $8,536.
