The increase, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2021, is driven primarily by decreased revenue on the sale of recycled materials. Over the past couple years, the market for recycled materials has decreased dramatically. Revenues from the sale of recyclables was previously used to offset the cost of disposal, but that is no longer the case.

Here is a breakdown of collection and disposal fees, which make up the total fees:

The increase is in accordance with Republic Services citywide contract.

In January, the City Council will also discuss the issuance of a request for proposals (RFP) for garbage and recycling haulers. On Nov. 4, the council directed staff to prepare an RFP to ensure the city is offering customers the best possible rates and service.

It is anticipated the RFP will be issued in January 2021 and a decision will be made based on the proposals in May 2021. Republic Services’ contract with the City of Shakopee goes through 2021, so any new service provider would start in January 2022.
