Shakopee Woman Takes Second at Indoor Triathlon

Annie Melek, a 41-year-old Shakopee resident, came in second among women during the Dakotah! Sport and Fitness' eleventh indoor triathlon.

Let the snow fall. One gym in Prior Lake has found a winter weather work-around, as one of the top finishers of the 11th Annual Indoor Triathlon can amply attest to.

A 41-year-old Shakopee resident named Annie Melek came in second for the women's category at the event, which was held at Dakotah! Sport and Fitness on April 13. First place went to Sarah Foley, 42, of Cologne, and third went to Trisha Caton, 29, of Chaska.

A Burnsville man named Tad Dunsworth, 49, came in first overall. Dunsworth also happens to be the director of the gym. In second place for men were Joe Eder, 33, and Mike Blair, 43, both of Prior Lake.

This time around, there were 44 competitors total at the unorthodox, late-winter athletic trial. Indoor triathlons are judged by distance, rather than time. Each participant had to complete a 7-minute swim, a 30-minute bike, and a 20-minute run. They were ranked according to pace—or by the total calculated distance they would have covered over that period.

The Dakotah! will also host a summer triathlon, the Lakefront Days Triathlon, on Aug. 3, which will follow the typical triathlon format. The triathlon is held in conjunction with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and the City of Prior Lake.
