Southwest Minneapolis 'Wow!' House: The Bauhaus Off Lake Harriet
Think this house was built recently? Think again. This eye-popping Modernist structure in Lynnhurst is living art history.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — This house two blocks from Lake Harriet will be open for viewing this Sunday, Oct. 1 from noon to 4. Built in 1959, it embodies the Bauhaus style that influenced everything from typewriters to skyscrapers. The current listed asking price is $1.175M.
As a modernist building, the house is full of unexpected twists of architecture. The wood fireplace in the great room is a prime example. Its cylindrical white chimney cuts two stories up the middle of the room, making no apologies for its function as a chimney. The Bauhaus school espoused marrying form with function at every opportunity. Even the marble bathroom appliances blend and merge. A stairwell banister spirals like a white gown.
Stucco is the main wall type outside. Some of the interior looks "normal", such as the dining room, den (complete with Murphy bed), and four bedrooms. Still the Bauhaus style comes through with a certain cozy functionality. The wood cabinetry and paneling are mostly mahogany, but there remains some of the lighter grained wood paneling indicative of the era in which it was built.
