Photos: William Sauntry Recreation Hall Goes Up For Sale As Private Residence
Yes, you can live in this palace. Fully restored and converted into a private home, this exotic time capsule in Stillwater is up for grabs.
STILLWATER, MN — The William Sauntry Recreation Hall has officially gone up for sale as a private residence. This exquisitely detailed National Historic Landmark has been fully converted into a standalone house. Much of the original Craftsman/Moorish Revival style has been preserved. Its current listed price is $1.65M.
Built in 1902 by wealthy Stillwater lumberman William Sauntry as an addition to his mansion on 4th Street (itself now a separately owned bed and breakfast), the Recreation Hall once housed a bowling alley, swimming pool, ballroom, and recreation area. Sauntry chose this opulent style, it is said, because of a trip he took to visit the Alhambra palace and fortress in Spain. Orientalism in architecture was popular among the affluent of the era, but rare for Minnesota.
After Sauntry's suicide at a hotel in St. Paul in 1914, the house was bought by a private party, converted into three apartments in the 1960's, and finally restored as a single-family residence in 1999. It has a fully functional kitchen, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an office, a sauna, and all of the appliances and utilities you would need in a livable home. The original ballroom remains mostly untouched.
