Family medicine physician Michael Smith, MD, is retiring after caring for patients at the Buffalo Clinic for 34 years.
He began practicing at the clinic on August 1, 1979 after spending a year and a half at the Monticello Clinic. He attended the University of Minnesota Medical School and, prior to that, spent four years in the Air Force.
His patients will continue to be seen by partners at the Buffalo, Monticello and Albertville-St. Michael clinics.

“Dr. Smith is one of the most loyal and dedicated physicians I know,” says Linda Dircks, administrator at the Buffalo Clinic. “He’s taken exceptional care of his patients and his patient loyalty has been returned tenfold. Over the years, he’s taken very little time away from his practice and was commonly seen in his office well into the evening hours.”
In his retirement, Dr. Smith is looking forward to enjoying more time with his wife, Karen, two daughters and grandson at his home in Monticello along with his lake home. As a water sports enthusiast, he’s also looking forward to having more time to enjoy sailing and wind surfing.
