Mississippi Governor Election 2019 Live Results: Reeves Wins

The race expected to be tough and an indication of how the nation might vote on presidential race

MISSISSIPPI — Residents in Mississippi have elected a new governor. Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves defeated Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood in a 2019 election closely watched as an indicator of how the nation feels heading into the 2020 presidential vote.

With 99 percent of the vote counted, Reeves had 52.2 percent of the vote and Hood had 45.6 percent.

The state was in the midst of its most competitive governor's race in almost 20 years, as Mississippi hasn't had a Democratic governor since 2003.

The winner will succeed the term-limited Republican Gov. Phil Bryant.

The White House has shown strong support for Reeves.

Vice President Mike Pence held a rally Monday at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi for the republican candidate, and President Donald Trump held a rally in the state on Friday.
