Mississippi Shooting: 8 Killed, Including Sheriff's Deputy

LINCOLN COUNTY, MS — Eight people have been killed, including a sheriff's deputy, in a shooting spree in rural Lincoln County in Mississippi, according to multiple media reports. The shooting reportedly took place at three separate homes.
The Daily Leader reports that the suspect, 35-year-old Willie Cory Godbolt, was taken into custody shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday.
Officers responded to a call at a home where a resident wanted Godbolt removed from the property. The Daily Leader reports that the sheriff's deputy and two others were killed there.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain told the Associated Press that charges had not been filed and it would be premature to discuss a motive at this point.
The shootings took place in an area of the state located about 60 miles south of Jackson, the state's capital.

"I ask all Mississippians to join Deborah and me in praying for those lost in Lincoln County. Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities. Too often, we lose one of our finest," Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement. "I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work. May the peace of the Almighty wash over those hurting after this senseless tragedy."
