Things You Find In a "Boutique" Bowling Center: Your Idea of Bowling?

There's been lots of talk of bowling in Affton and Shrewsbury lately. What kind of alley would you like to see?

The Shrewsbury Lanes is up for auction, which prompted a discussion on Patch about different types of bowling allies. There’s the kind of bowling alley that Jim Bulinski has run at Shrewsbury lanes, and a “boutique” bowling alley.

Here’s five things you might find at a “boutique” alley, from a reader. The idea is to have a modernized business that might attract middle-aged professionals.

  1. Hummus
  2. Salads
  3. Veggie burgers
  4. Contemporary cocktails
  5. Live music night for alternative bands

Other readers weren’t sold. “Hummus and that crap u can get anywhere,” one said. “There is something about the combo smells of hand driers, lane wax, shoe leather and fryer grease.”

Jim Bulinski responded that bowling alleys were always dark and smokey, though he said the smoke is now gone. Also, “We have not had 'FRIED' food in several years we use a Fry Wizard which uses hot air and fan system.”

Others suggested Dave and Busters, Trader Joe’s, Fuddruckers, Sonic or anywhere adults and kids can both go and have fun.
