Flash Flooding Not a Major Problem in Arnold, Imperial

Heavy rains today prompted Jefferson County emergency officials to alert residents who live near rivers to move to higher ground.

That's especially the case in Desoto where emergency evacuations and rescues have taken place, our partners at Fox 2 report. Power has been shut off in some parts of the city and an emergency shelter has been set up.

However, there have been no major reports of flooding in Arnold and Imperial, said Jina Akins, deputy director of the the Jefferson County Emergency Management Department. But that may change.

"We'll begin monitoring river forecasts and cresting stages on Friday morning," she said.

Ron Harder, a spokesman with the Rock Community Fire Protection District, said the only flooding issue he's aware of today was the creek behind Fox High School.

"The creek flooded onto the parking lot, and several students had to move their cars," he said.

The Jefferson County Emergency Management Department offers the following flooding preparedness tips: 

• Closely monitor forecasts realizing that predicted river stages and impact will likely change;
• Identify multiple routes to and from destinations if you are traveling or live in areas prone to flooding;
• Never attempt to drive or walk through flooded areas. Turn around, don’t drown.
