Seckman Boys Determined to Reach Winning Record

The Jaguars, 13-13 last season, are hoping to finish with a winning mark in 2010-2011.

The Seckman High Jaguars, 13-13 overall last season, are hoping to turn this season around and finish with a winning mark in 2010-2011.

They started the season with a 63-49 win against the Windsor Owls, but Head Coach Tim Zambo saw his team (5-6) lose their next four games before Seckman won the first of two rivalry matchups against Fox on Dec. 21.

Seckman fell to Fox in the second rivalry game, 48-51, on Monday afternoon at the Jaguar Holiday Tournament.

"I think the kids are working very hard defensively and are making progress every game. Offensively, we are taking care of the ball and getting the shots we want, they just are not falling for us," Zambo said.

He was glad to see his team notch a victory against their rival, Fox.

"I think the Fox game is a big game with district pride and bragging rights riding on that game. Seckman has won the showcase each year, I believe eight years in a row."

Even though Seckman went 1-2 at the Seckman tournament, Zambo saw it as a great opportunity.

"The Christmas tournament puts us up against some teams we would not see during the regular season. It is a competitive tournament with each team having a good chance to win it each year and no real dominating team that wins it every year," said Zambo.

With seven seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore on the roster this season, the Jaguars have experience and seem to be poised to finally get a victory in the Suburban South Conference. They went 0-7 in conference action last season.

Senior guard J.B. Arnold is Seckman's leading scorer this season at 12.2 points per game with a team-best 24 3-pointers. Senior forward Marc Viglasky is averaging 12.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Senior forward Alek Ferbet is adding 11.1 points and 6.9 boards.

Zambo outlined the team's goals for the season. "To be good defensively and hold our opponents in the 50s each game. We believe if we hold them there, and we shoot well, we are going to have a good chance to win every game. We would like to win four games in conference. We are shooting for 10 wins this season."

Seckman has allowed 60 or more points in just two of its nine games, both losses. If the Jaguars continue to focus on defense, that 10-win goal seems very much within grasp.
