Lafayette, Marquette Use 'Hot Wheels' to Light Up Holidays

To help brighten the holidays for children, classes at and hosted Hot Wheels Drives, collecting nearly 3,550 toy cars.  According to Lafayette High band teacher Traci Bolton, the idea for the car drive came to her a few years ago.

“We have been collecting Hot Wheels with my guitar classes for the last three years,” Bolton said. “After experiencing success with it in my class, I suggested the idea to other teachers.”

Two Marquette High School teachers decided to join the car collecting efforts; chemistry teachers Dr. Melissa Gable and Ed Bolton, who is also the husband of Traci Bolton. Ed Bolton credits the success of the project to the students.  “The project is just good kids doing a good thing,” said Ed Bolton. “Hot Wheels are only a dollar, so it’s easy for students to scrounge that up.  The idea that kids are helping kids really resonates with our students.”

Dr. Gable also added, “The students’ support for this project was overwhelming. We hope to expand our efforts next year in order to help brighten the holidays for other area children.”
