The Ballwin Police Department is warning residents that along with warmer weather, summer brings an increase in crime, including burglaries.

In an email alert, the Ballwin Police Department is reminding residents to be diligent to help reduce the occurrence of these incidents.

Police stated there are simple precautions residents can take to prevent falling victim to a crime.

Following are pieces of information police want residents to know, according to the email alert.

  1. While garage burglaries are down almost 20 percent from this time last year, thefts from vehicles are almost double last year’s total.
  2. Keep vehicles locked with the windows up at all times, when they are not occupied. Remove all valuables when vehicles are parked.
  3. Thieves use garage door openers to access homes and garages. Park your vehicles in a locked garage when possible and keep the keys inside your home.
  4. Keep all home doors closed and locked. This includes garages, sheds, and patio doors. Burglaries from open garages, sheds, and residences are more prevalent in the summer months, and sometimes even occur when the homeowner is present.
  5. When on vacation, stop delivery of mail and newspapers, or have a neighbor pick them up. Set inside lights on a timer to turn on during the overnight hours. Set your burglar alarm, and have a neighbor watch your residence while you’re on vacation.
  6. Make sure to leave contact information with neighbors when you go on vacation so they reach you if necessary.
  7. You can also contact the Ballwin Police Department at (636) 227-9636 and ask to be placed on the Vacation Watch list. Officers will check on your house periodically.

Police also remind residents to contact the Ballwin Police Department at 911 immediately, if they encounter any suspicious activity. Police said try to provide good a good description to police, including license plate numbers, vehicle make, model and color, sex, race, clothing descriptions, height, weight, hair color, and direction of travel.
