Students explain the history of the run and to talk about the Ballwin family this year's race is meant to help.

The 11th annual Jim Schoemehl 5K is scheduled for Saturday, when runners are expected to turn out on behalf of Gina Byrd, a woman from Ballwin diagnosed with ALS.

students from this year's marketing class recently stopped by FOX2 to explain the history behind the effort and to give some information about family the event will benefit this year.

The run got its start in 2001 when students learned that the high school's marketing teacher's husband, Jim Schoemehl, was diagnosed with ALS or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. Jim lost his fight with ALS, but his legacy lives on in the annual run.
