"In Room 107, the teachers offered to the children a provocation of creating a collection of loose parts to use in many different areas of our daily work. Teachers were curious about how many different ways loose parts would offer an extension to -- and excitement in -- our learning.

Some questions that teachers asked were:

  • How many ways could we incorporate the use of loose parts throughout different subject areas in the kindergarten classroom?
  • What will the different loose part collections look like?
  • Would this provocation offer a richer learning experience through virtual learning?

Teachers observed the excitement as families created their collections of loose parts, while learning virtually and we began to think of ways to extend our work with the children to include their loose part collections. We were able to find ways to use loose parts in literacy, mathematics, expressive arts, self-portrait work, birthday celebrations and many other areas of learning."
