Heights Remains Open After Water Main Break

The Richmond Heights community center did not have to close, as had previously been expected.

The Heights community center remained open Dec. 28 as work continued to repair a suspected water main break, a Missouri American Water official said.

The water company was able to work on a parallel water main and keep water flowing to the center, said Christie Barnhart. Ten nearby residences were expected to be without water for a couple of hours while repairs were finished.

One lane of traffic out of four near The Heights had been closed during the repairs, Barnhart said.

Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch had previously reported that the center would be closed for several hours based on information it received from The Heights.

"We were just informed by the water company that there's a water main break out front," said Teresa Proebsting, the city's parks and recreation director, at the times. She said The Heights had to be closed temporarily because no water was going to the bathrooms and the lack of water available for fire sprinklers would pose a safety hazard.

Water had collected on a sidewalk in front of the facility, and a barricade had been set up around the area as of 7 a.m.
