Chaminade Soccer Retools in 2013 After State Title Run

The Red Devils were among the first teams on the practice field Monday on the first day schools could begin fall practice.

The squad features seven players who made a run to last season's state title game against CBC, but will be without Tommy Barlow, the Gatorade Player of The Year in 2012 who, along with a few others, decided to play for the Scott Gallagher Soccer Academy program this year instead of returning to play for Chaminade.

"They don't deserve to be talked about, because they're not with us. I hate to say that," said Head Coach Mike Gauvain. "This is the group we've got. We've got some good returning players, we've got some great returning talent in our sophomore and junior class and those guys are going to have to step up and they will, they'll be fine."

Junior Zach Pogue steps in as the Red Devils' goalkeeper after getting elevated to varsity last season. Senior Co-Captains Ryan Fagan and Brandon Ebert return for their third season on varsity after having been big contributors last season at back and midfield.

Fagan said this year's club is totally different than last season's version, but that he'll take what he learned about being comfortable in big game situations and apply it to the pitch in 2013. Ebert said team chemistry is what will be key for the Red Devils this season.
