Educator On A Mission To Positively Impact A Million Students

Dr. Bryan Pearlman is touring the country training school staff on trauma, challenging behaviors and achievement for all students.

Dr. Bryan Pearlman is becoming used to airports, hotels, and Uber rides. He is traveling the country speaking with educators about trauma, challenging behaviors, and ensuring that all students succeed.

In the past two years, he has presented to over 20,000 educators. Dr. Pearlman says there is still a lot of work to do, "We started the concept of an educator training tour with the goal of working with at least a hundred thousand educators. This would then positively impact a million kids or more. We are off to a good start, but there is still a lot of work to do."

At a recent training in Boston, an educator shared her experience as an audience member at the training, "In my 20 year career, I have heard hundreds of speakers at educator conferences, trainings, and school professional development days. This is the first time I can remember that I cried, laughed, and reflected very deeply all within a two-hour training. I left with so many strategies that I can use during this upcoming school year."

Dr. Pearlman says that this experience is typical at his trainings, "During the trainings, I share data, research, and strategies that can be implemented immediately. However, the most important part of the trainings has to do with the stories that I share from my own experience as a struggling student and stories from my days as a teacher and principal. These stories have parts that make people laugh and other parts that make some participants cry. These reactions show how much educator care about the kids they serve and that this is so much more than just a job. I also work very hard to infuse hands-on problem solving activities that enable educators to be able to work together to best help their students."

In addition to educator trainings, Dr. Pearlman is a published author. His book, Whatever It Takes For All Students To Succeed In School And Life, was published earlier this year. Dr. Pearlman shares his motivation for writing the book, "My wife Lena is a mental health therapist in St. Louis. Over the past few years, my work as an educator and her work in mental health have overlapped quite a bit. The number of students coming to schools that have been traumatized and those with significant mental health concerns has grown tremendously. At the same time, the number of teens and children coming to Lena's practice has increased substantially. In addition, the ages of the patients with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health concerns has dropped lower and lower each year. We knew that we had to do something to help educators to be better equipped to be able to support the social, emotional and mental health needs of the children. This book is a good first step!"
