Jurassic Park 3-D

  • Run time: 127 mins.
  • Rated: PG-13

Mark Glass, Patch blogger: **** Twenty years ago, Steven Spielberg added to his impressive list of WOW! movies, thrilling, scaring and fascinating the world with this sci-fi epic of cloned dinosaurs running amok at an island theme park. Now hordes of computer geeks have pounced upon the Master's master print, upgrading it with current 3-D technology to fine effect. Not only does the original story hold up, but the basic question of whether our collective wisdom is keeping pace with the rapid pace of scientific advances to use our new knowledge safely and productively is perhaps more relevant today. It’s the same question one might ask when hearing the cell-phone blather of others, who often seem to be chatting on the go simply because they can, not because they really have anything important or urgent to discuss. Evil Dead (the remake)

  • Run time: 85 mins.
  • Rated: R

Mark Glass, Patch blogger: * I’ve enjoyed most of Sam Raimi’s films, his recent Oz the Great and Powerfulnotwithstanding. The Evil Dead he wrote and directed in 1981 as his debut feature was a breath of fresh air, if that term can apply to gruesome horror flicks. He added considerable wit to his mayhem, establishing a viable premise and efficiently engaging us with  the characters before dispatching them with gusto. The novelty of his style spawned two worthy, dropoff-free sequels, and made childhood pal Bruce Campbell a star in certain cult corners. Evil Dead II serves up one of the best sight gags in film history. And if you haven’t seen it, catch The Quick and the Dead for its wry, hip take on classic Westerns. Full Review

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

  • Run time: 110 mins.
  • Rated: PG-13

Mark Glass, Patch blogger: ** Well, the recent trend in action flicks continues. 3-D technology advances make the visuals ever more exciting, while the scripts get dumber. Admittedly, my knowledge of the characters’ backstories is wanting, since I didn’t see their 2009 adventure, G. I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. For fellow newbies, this Joe isn’t just one soldier. It’s the name for an elite unit of special forces with a broad range of military, Ninja and other stylized skills - mortals ranking somewhere between Navy Seals and Robocop. Full Review
