Patch Photo Of The Day: Summer Day In Black And White

Share your photos with Patch to be featured and for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

CREVE COEUR, MO — This photo from Gary Stevens, taken on a trail near Creve Coeur Park, shows how effective black and white photos can be, especially for high contract scenes shot in broad daylight. Cellphones revolutionized photography, but their tiny sensors have poor dynamic range — that is, they're not good at capturing the bright sky and the dark shadows at the same time. Reducing an image to black and white can make the blown highlights look better and the dark shadows seem moody rather than underexposed.

Go try it out on one of your own photos. And don't forget to send us your best shots for a chance to win our summer photo contest. We'll be posting submissions like this one until we pick a winner on September 1. You could win a $50 Amazon gift card and a feature interview published on Patch.
