Putting the “C” in Kindergarten

Discover the Difference

Many things go into the creation of a great kindergarten classroom. Qualified teachers, colorful décor, engaging manipulatives, a plethora of books, art supplies, and places to move and discover are just a few of the standard items. Many schools around the area offer all of these in varying degrees and formats, and there are a variety of great choices when it comes to overall development for kindergarten age students. At St. Mark’s Lutheran School, there is another critical component which we feel is essential. The “C” in kindergarten. The “C” is the Christian perspective from which all other subjects and activities are built. It permeates the classroom atmosphere in which students are taught to love and forgive the way Jesus did. It is the foundation upon which relationships are built between teacher and student, teacher and parents, and students with each other. It recognizes God’s hand in the creation of the world, and it helps students develop a servant attitude with regard to taking care of the beautiful world and opportunities we have been given.
Janet Landgraf, St. Mark’s kindergarten teacher, loves providing an exceptional learning experience for the little ones in her room. She designs activities to be multisensory. “I want them to see it, hear it, touch it, and move while they’re learning,” she says. “Each child is uniquely created by God, and I strive to present information in as many ways as I can so that all students engage, enjoy, and retain what they learn. In addition, Christ is a big part of all we do - from how we treat each other, to how we understand the world, to how we use the gifts and talents God has given each one of us.” It’s easy to see her love of teaching as she smiles and talks about her students and her plans for them. “I am thrilled to work with every child every day, and I take a little part of each one home with me each night so that I can be a better teacher for each one tomorrow.”
If you’d like to find out how the “C” in kindergarten might be a good fit for your child, please join us for a Kindergarten Round-Up on Thursday, November 15 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. There will be a light dinner followed by some time to meet Mrs. Landgraf, learn about St. Mark’s kindergarten program, and ask questions. Call the office at 314-938-4432 or contact www.stmarkseureka.org if you have any questions.
