Man Who Works in Fenton in Critical Condition After Hazelwood Tornado

Police believe he may have been seeking shelter as an EF2 tornado landed on Hazelwood on Wednesday night, and strong winds swept him.

The Hazelwood Police Department found a man unconscious on the shoulder of Nyflot Avenue directly below Interstate-170 Wednesday night.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has identified the man as John Patrick Duffy, 22 of Florissant. He works as a manager at a cinema in Fenton, the newspaper reports.

Police responded to a call from the 8800 block of Nyflot Avenue after passerby reported a man laying in the roadway. He was critically injured, according to police.

Lt. Ron Livingston said witnesses told the responding officers they saw the man fall from the highway bridge around 9:50 p.m. This was just after an EF2 torndo struck down in Hazelwood. Police said strong winds still blowing after the tornado probably blew the man over the railing. Witnesses report seeing the man get out of his car on southbound I-170. According to police, they said it was as if he was seeking shelter from the weather, and tripped onto the pavement below.

Duffy was rushed to SSM DePaul Health Center, where he has been listed in critical but stable condition, according to the Post-Dispatch.
