Research from the American Library Association shows that students who read independently become better readers; score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas; and have greater content knowledge than students who do not read on their own. Encourage your children to read independently with these tips.

Toddlers and younger children

Early exposure to books is key to developing a life-long love of reading. Reading to toddlers and young children before bed establishes a bedtime routine and creates the expectation that reading will be a positive part of their lives.

Elementary school age

According to the American Library Association, primary school children who read outside of school score higher on reading achievement tests. Just a small amount of independent reading increases comprehension, vocabulary growth, spelling ability, understanding of grammar, and knowledge of the world. To encourage reading with your children, take them to explore libraries or neighborhood book clubs.

Teens

As children age, a little independence in reading choices should be encouraged to support the child’s commitment to reading. Parents should provide some supervision to ensure the content is age-appropriate.

Adults

Parents and adults should lead by example, and show children that you enjoy reading as a pleasurable pastime.

Build the habit of reading books for entertainment and you’ll build a lifetime of better understanding.
