Florissant Budget Looks Good After First Half

The city's finance director gave the city council an update on the budget at the most recent work session.

The 2013 fiscal year for the City of Florissant appears to be on track, and, in some cases, ahead of the curve, according to the mid-year report.

Finance Director Randal McDaniel presented the report to City Council last week during its monthly work session. Florissant City Council approved a $31.5 million budget this past November.

McDaniel said that all funds are ahead of projections for the fiscal year, such as the Capital Improvement and Park Improvement funds, which were head more than 8 percent in projections. The General Fund was more than 3 percent ahead.

The city’s sale tax budget is even ahead as it is ahead 2.4 percent, despite recent years showing a decline. According to McDaniel’s report, if the trend continues for the second half of the year, the budget would finish $100,000 over projections.

McDaniel did point out a concerning spot in spending, however.

The Florissant Police Department has used more than 70 percent of its overtime budget, which was set at $230,000. Mayor Tom Schneider pointed out during the work session that the overtime was due to the spring storms that came through and the need of officers on the street.

McDaniel said it’s an account to watch for the rest of the year.

Overall, McDaniel said the city is on a good trajectory for the rest of the year.
