Florissant City Council Reviewing Meridian Waste Contract Extension

The extension could bring a 60 cents increase in the next few years.

With Meridian Waste in its last contracted year of service, the Florissant City Council will weigh a new agreement with the company at its next council meeting.

The new five-year agreement would not increase the current price for residential customers for the first three years, but it could at the start of the fourth year, according to the proposed contract.

The City of Florissant has contracted with the waste collection service since 2009 and extended its contract in 2011.

Under the proposed agreement, which had its first reading at the April 22 City Council meeting, the new contract would begin April 1, 2014 with the trash and recycling cost kept at $14.90 per month. Other prices would include the following:

  • Yard waste, $8.15 per month (unlimited and year round) or $9 for three months at a time with a 210 gallon limit
  • 96 gallon roll-out cart for $3.50 per month
  • Seniors would continue to receive 50 percent off of all services

If the Council agreed to extend the contract through year four—April 2017 through March 2018—the trash and recycle price would increase to $15.50 and stay the same through the 2019 extension.

On Meridian’s website, Lou Jearls, Florissant Public Works director, offers a testimonial to the city’s service by saying: “I am very pleased with Meridian Waste and the way they have executed their contract with the City. Their drivers are friendly and courteous. Their pickups are done in a neat, safe and timely manner. I’ve had very very few complaints with their service and in every case they were anxious to resolve the issue amiably. They are a professional, hard working and dedicated company. They represent and serve our City very well.”

The Council did the first reading on the bill regarding the contract at its previous meeting and will take the vote on it during its May 13 meeting.
