Hold Your Nose: Bridgeton Landfill Gets Stinkier This Week

The installation of reinforced concrete pipes will create a strong odor during the construction this week.

Bridgeton-area residents and employees might smell a stronger stench in the area, and there’s a reason for it.

This week, the Bridgeton Landfill will install reinforced concrete pipes, which will cause the stronger odor from the landfill, according to a Missouri Department of Natural Resources website.

The construction, which will take place through the end of April depending on weather, is a step in the process to cap the quarry area.

Republic Services, which owns this landfill as well as the West Lake Landfill, announced in January that the company had an interceptor plan, which would install gas wells to help with the subsurface heat and address the smells. Since that time, the company has gone through a number of steps involving drilling and installation of the wells.

The landfill has been a point of controversy for Bridgeton, Maryland Heights and the North County area for a strong odor coming from it, which has raised health concerns amongst residents.
