Lowe's Gives 2 Florissant Schools $4K for School Improvements
Cold Water and Jana elementary schools will both enhance their schools with the funding.
Lowe's recently donated more than $8,000 to two Hazelwood School District schools.
Cold Water Creek and Jana Elementary schools each received a grant of $4,800 from Lowe's Charitable and Education Foundation. The grant will help with each school’s project, including Cold Water’s fitness trail expansion and Jana’s Promethean board addition.
“We are so excited to be able to offer our students a new way to enjoy exercising,” Cold Water Principal Christa Warner said in a press release. “I would like to thank Nick Traughber, one of our physical education teachers, for writing the grant. He did a great job.”
Cold Water will use the grant to buy specially constructed fitness equipment, including a sit-up bench, a back extension machine, push-up bars and a vertical jump trainer, that can withstand elements and can be used for long-term in the future.
For Jana, the Promethean board, an interactive whiteboard commonly used in classrooms, will be placed in one of the first-grade classrooms. First-grade teacher Deana Davis said that all of the classrooms at Jana, with the exception of kindergarten and first grade, have a Promethean board.
“Every year the school gets one more promethean board,” Davis. “We wrote the grant to see if we could help get more than one Promethean board this year. We wanted to write the grant for something that was cutting edge and would help us keep up with current technology.”
First-grade teacher Teresa Seerey said the Promethean board will help the teachers engage their students more.
“When I learned about how the promethean boards work at the workshops the District offered, I was so excited to see how they worked and to figure out how to use some of the same principles in my classroom with the projector,” Seerey said in a press release. “But now with a promethean board, I am excited to be able to use it and all of its applications to help my students. We are so grateful to have received the grant.”
The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has contributed approximately $19 million in 2010, including $2.5 million in regional grants for school improvement, according to its website.
