Consumer Alert: 200,000 Infant Motrin Bottles Recalled

Check your cabinets. If you have "just-in-case" medicine for your children, grandchildren or just because, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is recalling 200,000 bottles of Motrin Infants formula. The company said this is risk the bottles contain tiny plastic particles.

A few stops to local stores and very quickly you'll notice the bottles have been pulled from shelves at Shop N' Save, Schnucks, Dierbergs and Walgreens in Hazelwood and Florissant.

J&J’s McNeil unit said on Friday the recall affects three lots of the Motrin Infants’ Drops Original Berry Flavor. Click here to view the full recall information. 

This Motrin product is used as a fever reducer and to treat aches and pains in children 2 years old and younger, depending on weight. 

The tiny plastic specs causing the recall are PTFE, a plastic also used in Teflon coatings, according to the Washington Post. No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date, according to the company, which described the plastic as "approximately 1 mm in size or about the size of a poppy seed."

The particles were found in a different product lot during the manufacturing process, and J&J did not say Motrin infants drops being recalled were found to contain plastic. The company said in its recall notice it decided to issue the recall because both products contain the same shipment of ibuprofen from a third-party supplier. Ibuprofen is the active ingredient in the pain reliever.

The recalled bottles have one of these lot numbers:

• DCB3T01
• DDB4R01
• DDB4S01

The recalled Motrin was manufactured at the company’s plant in Beerse, Belgium. 

McNeil’s main manufacturing plant of over-the-counter medicines in Fort Washington, Pa., has been closed since the spring of 2010, according to its website. 

That came after a string of recalls of various brands including Tylenol, Motrin and Zyrtec. That included the recall of more than 136 million bottles of children and infant over-the-counter medicines.
