First Icy Blast Of 2020 Has KCMO Working Overtime

The first blast of winter for 2020 has City crews prepping to keep our streets clear of snow and ice while some events and service operations set for Saturday are being re-scheduled.

The Kansas City metropolitan area is under a winter storm watch until Saturday evening. Rain throughout Friday is likely to turn to freezing rain, sleet and snow. Three to five inches of snow is anticipated, with snow leaving the area early Saturday afternoon.

Crews will operate about 200 heavy trucks through the night, salting routes as rain transitions to sleet. Arterial crews will work at least through 7:30 p.m. on Saturday; additional snow will warrant further snow operations.

Residential operators will crank up about 65 pickup trucks at 6 a.m. Saturday, passing through neighborhoods until to 6 p.m. Follow KCMO.gov/snow for updates.

The icy forecast also means the City is rescheduling the big job fair that was being held Saturday at the Robert J. Mohart Multi-purpose Center. The City wants to hire 60 people to join the Solid Waste staff, either as maintenance workers or equipment operators. That event is re-set for Feb. 1.

Other city operations affected by the weather include:

• Leaf and brush drop-off centers will be closed on Saturday.
• Gregg/Klice and Westport community centers will be open for normal hours (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) as warming centers only on Saturday. All other centers will be closed.
• All community centers should resume normal hours on Sunday, opening at 9 a.m.
