Roof Project To Close Streets Around Kansas City Hall

Starting Saturday, Nov. 9, workers will close Locust Street from 12th to 11th Streets and one lane of 11th Street for a roof replacement project at City Hall. The closure will last 2-3 weeks, depending on how weather affects the project.

Workers will set up a 550-ton, 472-foot tall, crane to transfer supplies and equipment to the tiptop of City Hall. That’s 412 feet from the street to the roof. The crane will be set up on Locust, blocking all three lanes.

City Hall’s north entrance remains open but here are more details:

• The observation deck will be closed.
• The ADA ramp to north entrance accessible with onsite escort.
• The ADA ramp is accessible from the west through employee entrance.
• The south entrance (12th Street) to City Hall is unaffected.
• The sidewalk from Oak street remains open and is the best option during the project.

Workers will also close 11th Street, between Cherry and Locust, on Saturday, Nov. 23 to take down the crane. This work is being done on Saturdays to avoid disrupting Municipal Court operations.

In addition to replacing the roof, the project will upgrade mechanical equipment located on the roof in order to increase the efficiency of the building’s heating and cooling systems.

The project is being funded through the General Services Department fixed plant operations capital improvements budget at a cost of $371,707.
